I thought I’d let you guys know what I’ve been using in my skincare routine lately. The main base of my routine I’ve had in place for around 12 months, but I’ve slowly added other products in & swapped out what I think hasn’t had any benefit to my skin. This is based on what I do for a no-makeup day.
So I start my mornings by cleansing my face to get rid of any excess oil or dirt I’ve accumulated overnight – Garnier’s Fresh Lemongrass Wash is my absolute favourite. It’s soothing & smells like a spa! I use my Foreo to massage it into my skin for a full minute, then wash it off with warm water & a flannel. In-depth info on this here.
After I’ve cleansed & jumped out the shower, I then use a toner. I’ve been using AlumierMD’s Bright & Clear Solution on a cotton pad. It contains lactic & salicylic acid – basically it’s been keeping away any blackheads & completely smoothed my chin & nose out! Plus it leaves my skin looking flawless for the next stage. I leave that soak in for 2-3 minutes. I’ve written about it here for more info.
I massage a drop of The Ordinary’s Caffeine Solution under each eye area, taking care not to get any on my eyelids as I find it irritating. This is to reduce dark circles & puffiness – feels really refreshing. I’ve reviewed it here, for more insight.
Next stage is SPF. Yes – even if it’s cloudy, raining, dark, or I’m not even going outside! If I’m having a no-makeup day, I’ll add a pump of Drunk Elephants D-Bronzi drops just to give my face a bit of life! If I’m going to put makeup on, I’ll just go straight in with AlumierMD Clearshield sunscreen – this is all I use, I treat this as my moisturiser. It smoothes my skin out, reduces redness & it is literally the perfect base to my makeup, I love it just for that alone! It’s oil-free which is a complete bonus!
That’s all I do for my morning routine. It might seem a lot, but from jumping out the shower after cleansing, the rest of the steps take me 5 minutes in total. If I’m going to put makeup on after, like I said, the only thing I change is that I don’t put any bronzing drops in my sunscreen.
Again, the first thing I’ll do is cleanse. This is all I’ll use if it’s been a no-makeup day. If it has, I’ll double cleanse – I might start with The Body Shop’s Camomile Cleansing butter to remove 95% of makeup, then go in with Garnier. I’ll use the Foreo both times.
I might use this also if I’ve have a no makeup day. It’s Philosophy’s exfoliating wash. It has little, tiny beads in it to gently exfoliate your skin – I might use this once or twice a week max.
Yep – I use this morning & evening. Honestly, life changing. Also makes sure I catch any dirt/makeup I may have missed in the shower. Forever my number 1.
I use a different eye cream for evening than morning – I like a more moisturising one to sleep in. I’ve been flitting between these two for a while now. I found the Genial one in TK Maxx for £12.99. It has a metal head to it so you can massage your eyes. I picked this up randomly because I needed a new eye cream & it contains licorice, caffeine & vitamin C – excellent! When I Googled it a few weeks later to see if I could get another to replace it – turns out it costs £335 – WHAT THE FUCK?!!! First, I’m buzzing, I obviously got a freaking bargain. Secondly, I’m gutted – I can’t afford this as a regular cream, yet it smoothes all my lines & really makes a difference to my eye area! How sad! I switch it up with Fresh Beauty’s Youth Preserve eye cream – it is really moisturising & nourishing, especially if you wear a drying concealer all day.
I do this step 3-4 times per week. I pat a retinol into my skin. I’m currently using Drunk Elephant’s A-Passioni, which has been extremely nourishing & made a hell of a difference to my skin. I also found 0.5% retinol from The Ordinary lurking in my cupboard at the beginning of lockdown – Lord knows when I ordered that, it was unopened in it’s packaging! I’m using these up, then I’ll probably just to AlumierMD’s 1% retinol. Check out my retinol post here to get more info on its benefits.
Moisturising time! I actually mix 2 items together at this stage. The first one is AlumierMD’s Ultimate Boost Serum (more info here) & the second is AlumierMD’s Hydraclarite Moisturiser for oily/blemish prone skin. I apply a pump of each to my fingers, mix them together & then massage all over my face & neck. This combo gives me such a dewy look, I feel like I’m wasting it just going to bed! This combo is great for reducing my redness & reducing the look of any marks/blemishes on my skin overnight.
This routine takes a little longer, but still not crazy long. Possibly 10-15 minutes maximum! It’s the waiting in between products for them to soak in that takes the longest, so I use this time to put my PJ’s on or tidy the bedroom in between.
Once a week:
Once per week, I will definitely use the white tube at the back – the Enzymatic Peel. It’s basically a home chemical peel. I wrote about it here. It’s a chemical exfoliator that eats all my dead skin & leaves a silky smooth layer behind. Once or twice a week as well then, I will use a face mask. I’ll just choose a mask depending on how my skin is acting or feeling. If I need a good pore extraction, I’ll use The Body shop, if I want something moisturising I’ll go for Turmeric & Honey!
There you have it! My morning/evening routines! Do I use too many products? Or not enough? I know I definitely need to incorporate a Vitamin C serum into my morning routine – I’m currently saving up for that as I want a good quality serum. What does your routine look like?
