When I first started introducing meaningful skincare into my routine, I’d get super impatient if I didn’t see life-changing results by the next morning. What I didn’t realise was that certain ingredients or products can actually require a little patience before the results start to become visible. I thought I’d do a breakdown of a few of these ingredients in case you weren’t aware of the time some of these can take…Hang in there if you are using them, consistency is definitely key!
Retinol – This can actually take up to 12 weeks to have the full benefits & show great results. Some brands do advertise that you can see results within a couple weeks & you might! My pores definitely appeared tighter within a few weeks, but with consistent use, I saw even better results 3-4 months in.
Hyaluronic Acid – If you didn’t know what this does for your skin, hyaluronic acid is an amazing hydrator for the skin. It can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water & creates a plumping effect to the skin. You will more or less be instantly hydrated from hyaluronic acid, but it will take around 8-9 weeks usage for it to smooth out fine lines & wrinkles.
Glycolic Acid – This is a chemical exfoliator – it will reduce scarring & unclog your pores as well as encouraging new cell turnover. You will see small results within 2-3 weeks, but a consistent usage for 6-8 months will show the full scale of what glycolic acid can do for smoothing out your skin.
Vitamin C – If you suffer with hyperpigmentation, expect to see it almost or completely faded by month 2 or 3. If you are just using it for the benefits of enhancing your radiance & using it to help your cells fight free-radicals, minor results can be seen within 2-3 weeks.
Azelaic Acid – This is usually prescribed or recommended for people with rosacea or acne. It can decrease swelling, redness & also kill bacteria. If you have severe symptoms, you might see progress within 6 weeks, but it is recommended to use for at least 12 weeks – you should see some considerable results by then.
Benzoyl Peroxide – I actually used this when my acne came back with a vengence when I was 23. This is great for killing bacteria to help acne. It can take up to 4 weeks to start showing results, but by month 4 it should be in full swing. I actually saw results within the 4 weeks that kept my spirits up, so I was lucky! Make sure to have a good moisturiser alongside this, it can dry your skin out with daily use.
Salicylic Acid – Great for spot-prone skin or acne sufferers. It unclogs pores & can dissolve debris on the skin. 12 weeks of consistent use should get you some great results!
Rosehip Oil – I absolutely loved this oil in my early 20’s. Rosehip oil is great for soothing skin, but also reducing the look of acne scarring. I will sing its praises until the day I die! Usually it can take up to 8 weeks to start noticing results, although you may see redness reducing & any inflammation calming within a few days of usage.
